GRE Exam
What is GRE?

GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) is a standardised test conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Services). ETS GRE scores are accepted by most of the elite graduate level schools for master’s degree programs (like MS in USA). It’s gone through a lot of changes over the years. In its newest avatar, it is called the GRE revised General Test.

GRE Exam Eligibility

The eligibility requirement for GRE is the document required to prove your identity. For Indian candidates, one needs just a valid passport. You’ll have to get your original passport (not photocopies) which clearly shows your full name, photograph and signature. Please note that none of the other documentation (like birth certificate, international driving license etc) can be used as an alternate identity proof. This is followed very strictly.

Apart from this, ETS does not set any age, qualification, timing related pm-requisites. However, there will be a additional criteria set by universities that accept GRE scores. For each of their programs, they may have minimum age, experience and qualification related filters.

GRE Exam Dates in 2017 - 2018

Unlike other entrance dates for such exams in India, there are no specific GRE Exam dates. A candidate can take it any time of the year by taking an appointment with the closest GRE exam center. But with this flexibility, comes another issue at hand. During the peak application season which is around August to December, it usually gets difficult for you to get an appointment in your preferred exam center. The candidate may be forced to book a day and time at another center that is not the first choice for the candidate.

This makes it important to plan GRE preparation schedule and test dates well in advance.

GRE is a generalised test which relates to not any particular discipline or field. It has been designing to evaluate skills tha you’ve already picked up over the years. This allows a wide range of universities to use it to benchmark applicants f om diverse backgrounds applying to a big mix of degrees.

GRE exam pattern has overall 3 sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning.

Analytical Writing section tests : The ability to analyse facts, dissect arguments, judge the presented evidence and present individual views in the most convincing and structured manner. Verbal Reasoning section checks candidates’ capacity to understand the content author’s perspectives and intentions, prioritise the points made, and connect the dots across various ideas presented, even if they may not necessarily be documented in a coherent manner. This is the tricky section for non-native English speakers. Quantitative Reasoning is where one’s comfort level with numbers and quantitative data is tested. It is imperative to understand the problem and use models and mathematical formulas from geometry, algebra, arithmetic) to solve them. The good news is that the examinee has access to a calculator. So no complex mental arithmetic is a requisite.
