The United States consists of 50 states. Forty-eight states constitute the United States. The U.S. borders Canada on the north, Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico on the south.
The US consists of more than 3000 colleges and universities, home to more than 6 million international students pursuing various courses and degrees in engineering, medical, technology, education, management and various other domains.
US, famous for its diversity, facilities, hospitality and development, is the world favorite destination for education and life. Home to a wide variety of cultures and diversity, students get firsthand experience of diversity, cultures and people from across the globe. This expands the horizons, exposes to various cultural practices and gives an unparalleled experience to students.
US is the world leader in technology and research. This advantage is a huge add-on for the students studying the United States as they have exposure to innovative technologies and processes. This is the greatest strength that attracts millions of students every year.
In the United States, education is provided by the public sector. Control and funding comes from three levels: federal, state, and local. Child education is compulsory. Bachelor’s programs are typically four years long.
Community colleges offer Associate Degrees of two years. Post completing two-year Associate degrees, students can join either upper-division colleges or universities to complete the balance two years for obtaining the Bachelor’s degree. Specialized programs like Engineering are equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree. These are known as ‘transfer’ programs. The range and diversity of programs offered are quite large.
The universities and institutes offer scholarships and study loans to International students to fund their expenses on education and living expenses. Along with that, students can work on part time basis to meet the study and stay cost. Yet, students should evaluate their funds and plan accordingly. According to the NAFSA website, ‘81 percent of international students studying at the undergraduate level in the United States receive no assistance to pay for their education. At the graduate level 47 percent must fund their own education’.
Colleges provide admission opportunities to international students without any prejudice or bias. Admissions committee also considers early admissions for students who are in their third year of undergraduate program.
Along with a very good academic background from Class 10th to 12th, international applicants are also expected to have outstanding scores in TOEFL/IELTS and SAT, for admission into premium US universities at the bachelor’s level. Similarly, for master’s, international applicants should have good academic background and a strong GRE/GMAT and TOEFL/IELTS score.
Average cost of tuition and fees is approx. 10,000-20,000 $ per year, depending upon program, institution and location. Living expenditure would add up to another 8,000-10,000 $ per year, according to the student’s lifestyle. Financial Aid is rare for students undergoing Bachelor’s program. Bachelor’s being a four-year program, the overall cost is very high. Also, Teaching and Research Assistantships are available for Master’s level and not for the Bachelor’s.
Accreditation of colleges and universities is crucial in choosing the right institution, as it ensures uniformity in curriculum, proper designing of courses, meeting the infrastructure needs, proper faculty and facilities. Six Regional Accrediting associations provide accreditation in six regions of USA – Middle States, New England, North Central, Northwest, Southern and Western.
After securing admission the next step is to work on the VISA process. USA visa process is relatively simpler, but difficult to get. Professional guidance plays a key role in completing the process error free and with high success rate.
Most international students in the United States hold an F-1 visa, which is the U.S. non- immigrant student visa.
